Application

The Cecil College E&M Building was constructed on space previously occupied by vacant grounds and parking lots.  Design began back in 2012 and was completed in August of 2014.  The new three story structure houses engineering and physics learning laboratories, a math tutoring and testing center, a conference and distance learning room, group & quiet study areas, and an outdoor terrace.  Constructed at a cost of $23.5 million, this impressive 26,683 square foot building is now a gleaming centerpiece on campus.

Function

Cambridge Architectural was selected to provide 19 massive stainless steel mesh sunscreens for the building facade.  Each sunscreen measures 81" W and 350" H.  Cambridge Cubist mesh was specified by the architect for its 80% open area and for its ability to span the entire building height.  The mesh is secured to the structure with Cambridge Architectural's patented Eclipse attachment tube system.  The mesh installation totalled 3,725 square feet.

Benefit

The E&M Building was designed and constructed to attain LEED Silver certification which will be a first in Cecil County.  In addition to the heat gain reduction provided by the mesh sunscreen panels over the glass curtain wall, the facility's design incorporates a number of other sustainable features including a green vegetated roof, energy efficient lighting & HVAC, and a storm water reclamation system.
